Major Story

US personnel injured in attack on airbase in Iraq
Several US personnel sustained injuries in a suspected rocket attack on the Al Asad airbase in western Iraq. The incident has added fuel to the already heightened tensions in the Middle East. The attack came just as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken described the region as being at a "critical moment" following the deaths of senior leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah.
According to US officials, two Katyusha rockets were fired at the base, with one landing inside. A Department of Defence spokesperson confirmed the attack, stating that initial indications suggested multiple US personnel were injured, though none critically. President Joe Biden, briefed on the situation, emphasized the US's preparedness to defend its forces and respond to any threats.
This attack follows a US strike in Iraq last week aimed at militants preparing to launch drones against US and coalition forces. The region remains volatile, with recent killings of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and a top Hezbollah commander further inflaming tensions. Iran and Hezbollah have threatened retaliation, increasing the potential for further conflict in an already unstable area.
