🇩🇰🇬🇱 Denmark boosts Greenland troop presence
Denmark is expanding its military presence in Greenland, with additional combat soldiers expected to arrive in Kangerlussuaq, while about 200 troops are already deployed in Nuuk and western Greenland, according to Danish officials. The soldiers are taking part in the Arctic Endurance training exercise, and Denmark’s Arctic commander, Maj. Gen. Søren Andersen, said the deployment is driven by concerns about Russia rather than pressure from the United States.
Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said Copenhagen has asked NATO to consider a mission to Greenland following talks with the alliance’s leadership. Andersen said the operation is expected to last one to two years, with further deployments planned for 2026 and beyond in cooperation with foreign forces. The move comes as U.S. President Donald Trump continues to raise the prospect of annexing Greenland, claims Danish officials criticised while noting that there is no evidence of increased Chinese or Russian activity near the island.
