Major Story

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning, suggesting Moscow might arm countries targeting Western assets in retaliation for the West's delivery of long-range weapons to Ukraine. This escalation follows approvals by several Western nations, including the United States, allowing Ukraine to strike targets within Russia. Putin condemned this support, hinting at "very serious problems" and an asymmetric response, though he did not specify which nations might receive Russian arms.

The Russian leader specifically criticized Germany for permitting Ukraine to use German-made weapons against Russian targets, asserting that such actions could irreparably damage Russian-German relations. On the US front, President Biden has sanctioned Ukraine's use of American-supplied weapons near the Kharkiv region but restricted the use of long-range ATACMS missiles on Russian soil. Despite these restrictions, recent reports confirm Ukraine has used US weapons for strikes inside Russia.

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron emphasized Ukraine's autonomy in deciding how to utilize British-supplied weapons, underscoring Ukraine's right to defend itself by striking Russian territory if necessary. Additionally, Ukraine has accused North Korea of supplying missiles used within its borders, while Western intelligence indicates Russia has deployed Iranian-made drones in the conflict, adding to the complexity of the situation.

At the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin also addressed the sensitive issue of nuclear escalation, warning the West against underestimating Russia's willingness to use nuclear weapons if its sovereignty is threatened. He dismissed fears of an imminent Russian attack on NATO territories, calling such speculations nonsensical and urging the West to reconsider its stance, suggesting that portraying Russia as an aggressor only harms Western interests.
