🇺🇸🇨🇦🇲🇽 Trump calls USMCA ‘irrelevant’ to US
US President Donald Trump said the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement is “irrelevant” to the United States, stating during a visit to Detroit that it offers no real advantage and that Canada wants the deal because it needs it.
He made the remarks while promoting the return of manufacturing to the US and touring a Ford factory ahead of a speech on the economy.
Major automakers, including Ford, General Motors, Stellantis, Tesla and Toyota, have urged the administration to extend the agreement, citing reliance on integrated supply chains across the US, Canada and Mexico.
Industry representatives said the pact supports global competitiveness, efficiency gains and significant annual cost savings, while General Motors’ president described North American supply chains as complex and a major strength. The agreement, which replaced NAFTA in 2020, is due for a review this year to determine whether it should expire or be renegotiated.
